Community Outreach

  • Camp Laurelview-Any given year, we send about 20 young people to Camp Laurelview; a summer church camp that can (and does) change lives. First Christian covers half the cost of camp for any of our youth who attend camp. Full scholarships are also available as needed.
  • First Christian maintains an in-house food pantry serving about 20 families.
  • The Angel Tree program collects gifts for children of low-income families. Through this program, children have a Christmas that they would not have had otherwise.
  • Relay for Life. Through hoagie sales, flamingo flocks, and other means, we raised $2,500 this past year for Charleroi’s Relay for Life. That money goes to support cancer research. Church members man a booth throughout the 12-hour Relay for Life event at Charleroi Area High School’s football stadium.
  • Meals on Wheels. Teams from First Christian Church take to the streets to help deliver meals for folks who might otherwise go hungry.

 Ecumenical Outreach

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) takes an active role in the Charleroi Area Ministerial Association (CAMA). CAMA’s programs include:

  • The St. Afterschool Program for young people in grades 1-4. St. Afterschool meets every Tuesday from mid-September through mid-May, throughout the school year, at Christ Lutheran Church in Charleroi. Students get a free meal, and they get help with their homework. They also enjoy crafts projects and good books. During all of this, they learn about Jesus. St. Afterschool is free to participants and to their families.
  • A Thanksgiving Day dinner, free to the Charleroi community. CAMA also sponsors a community Thanksgiving service on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving.
  • A Baccalaureate service for the senior class at Charleroi Area High School. During this service, CAMA awards the Vincent Vitori Memorial Scholarship to one or more deserving seniors.
  • A series of Lenten worship services, hosted by Charleroi-area churches during the period leading up to Easter.
  • An annual service of Prayer for Christian Unity.
  • A Christmas cantata, performed by a community choir comprised of members of CAMA churches.
