The Rev. Charles Cochran took on the
duties of senior pastor effective Jan. 1, 2015.
Pastor Charlie is implementing a
vision, crafted in cooperation with First Christian’s lay leadership, of
creating a spiritually nurturing and welcoming church home for all who may wish
to join us, with an especial emphasis on younger families.
Cochran is a second-career minister,
having served more than 20 years as a newspaper editor and reporter. He last
practiced print journalism for the Savannah (Georgia) Morning News, where he
was hired in May 1997 to open a bureau in Effingham County just outside
Savannah. He held an assortment of newsroom roles over nine years with the
Cochran is a 2007 graduate of Erskine
Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina. In July 2007, he was ordained
as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
His background as a minister includes a
stint as pastor of First Christian Church (DOC) of Augusta, Ga., and a
year-long residency in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at New Hanover
Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina.
He is married to Laurie Ash Cochran,
who teaches special education. They live in Monongahela.
